Even though it sounds like it might be plural, the noun news is always singular in English (it's actually uncountable). We say is because news is treated as one thing, like information. So, just like we say The information is helpful, we say The good news is helpful.


As for the phrase a wake-up call, it means that something unexpected happened that made people realize changes were needed. It’s like a warning that tells you to pay attention and make changes. In this sentence, missing the deadline was a wake-up call for the team. It helped them see they needed a better plan.
